Hardwood, Vinyl, and Tile: How to Maintain Flooring After Installation

Replacing flooring is a big decision that involves time and money. No matter what flooring material you choose, you want to make it last for many years after installation. The lifespan of flooring partially depends on how well you maintain it. Therefore, Claghorn Custom Flooring wants you to understand how to maintain flooring after installation for these three types: hardwood, vinyl, and tile.

Hardwood Flooring

One of the great things about hardwoods is that they tend to hide dirt more than some carpeting. However, that dirt and debris can damage flooring, and harm the finish when left unattended. Therefore, when it comes to hardwood flooring, one of the best things you can do to maintain it is to keep it free from debris, and Architectural Digest agrees. To accomplish this feat, vacuum or sweep your floors as much as possible (on the hardwood setting) with strong suction to reduce the risk.

The next best thing you can do to maintain hardwood flooring is to use the correct cleaner. Now, this isn’t exactly straightforward since what’s best depends on the finish. For that reason, make sure you understand what type of wood and what type of finish is on your flooring. Then, ask the installer what they recommend for ongoing cleaning and maintenance so that you don’t ruin the finish or cause hazing.

Vinyl Flooring

Luxury vinyl plank flooring is an excellent choice for many homeowners. Like hardwood flooring, homeowners should use a dust mop or sweeper to do daily maintenance. Daily sweeping keeps the floor free from dust, dirt, and debris that can damage the vinyl. Vacuuming doesn’t have to be time-consuming, though. Add it to your daily routine, and it becomes part of everyday life.

When you clean the floors, stay away from harsh chemicals and ammonia. Additionally, don’t steam clean luxury vinyl flooring. Instead, a mixture of water and apple cider vinegar can do the trick. You can also talk to your flooring service expert to ask for brand-name products that work.

Tile Flooring

Like hardwood and vinyl, there are also many different types of custom tile flooring. Still, you can maintain the flooring similarly. For example, no matter the type of tile, you can use warm water and mild soap on a soft cloth to wipe away dirt, spills, and stains as they occur. Staying on top of things as they happen goes a long way toward ensuring a lifetime of use.

Next, vacuum or sweep regularly with soft bristles to avoid any damage. Then, do a deeper clean with non-abrasive cleaners and a soft-bristled brush as needed. When you do, make sure to get the grout and space between tiles. At some point, you may have to regrout.
